LEWIS BENNETT: TRADE WINDS

Rastafari/ HIM Haile Selassie I position on Israel and Palestine

Greeting Rastafari Family and those who research Emperor Haile Selassie I and Ethiopian Relations.  In this time of great tribulation, we need to remember the King of Kings, and have a moral compass within that we can trust. This is a serious topic of Biblical proportions, where the ancient and modern meet. We will talk about the Emperor’s position and a little about the dynamics that brings us to this present time. Ethiopia’s relationship with Israel, as well as His proposed solutions and guidelines for the two state solution for Palestine and Israel.

Rather than showing the history of the countries relationship, let’s start with this as an intro: That the recent destruction of Gaza and the constant war crimes being committed by Israel and Hamas goes against Geneva Conventions and Rome Statutes, and The UN Charter, all of which the USA and Israel have ratified. The use of chemical weapons that are banned on dense populations by Israel are illegal under international law. All war crimes need to be investigated and parties held accountable on all sides.  We as the Rastafari community at large, mourn the lives of all innocent lives lost, from all religions, nations and races equally.  We demand, that food, water and fuel be given immediately to Palestine, so that those who are starving, dehydrated, and sick may be tended. A immediate ceasefire as demanded by the 2/3 of the UN General Assembly in their recent resolution is the moral cry from the world, in order that loss of life and war crimes cease, we support this call on behalf of international morality. We also agree the need for the release of all innocent people being held without charge or considered hostages on both sides. The murder of over 9000 Palestinian civilians, the majority being women and children is an assault on all of humanity. We also demand justice for the journalists and over 65 UN workers who have been killed by Israeli bombs.

Most of the information has been gathered in the book ” Alliance and Alienation, Ethiopia and Israel in the days of Haile Selassie by Haggai Erlich and cross checked by InI. I will say that though the information is incredibly telling it also has hints of the same anti- Arab sentiments that have contaminated the entire world view. With that said, the history of the creation of borders by the British after World War 1 and the diverse reactions and forms of Islam that were in set regions, the distinction of those who were considered moderate Muslims and those that were considered fundamentalist were important on a global level. Islam has existed in the region in and surrounding Ethiopia since Islam’s inception, which Ethiopia is apart of. The very real attacks, threats and history of Muslim Christian relations in Ethiopia also have impacted the decisions made by Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa in regard to Islamic countries in the area. Like most of Africa, and the so called Middle East, had been colonized, recently became independent and in the latter 20th century were ripe for proxy wars due to the need for financial assistance from outside nations. The dynamics of being in such a region, and situation, His Imperial Majesty being a Christian King surrounded by Islamic countries made the importance of being aligned and non aligned, trying out create or explore relationships, public and private that would take books to cover.

To get to the point that most want to know when it comes to the disintegration of relations between Emperor Haile Selassie I and the Israeli Government, where Ethiopia stood in the Israeli- Palestine conflict has to be seen as the decision of the Emperor. Ones may speculate on how much coercion was present severing of all ties with Israel, however the decisions presented by Ethiopia, are very conscious of the long term impacts and history’s judgment regarding the importance of long term peace.

In 1967 Ethiopia was a non permeant United Nations Security Council, and it a rare moment, all permeant and non permeant members agreed to UN Resolution 242, after the 6 six day war and the illegal expansion of Israeli territory. Internationally the borders were agreed on, in which Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Syria were to be protected from illegal occupation.  In this the set borders of Palestine was outlined and that Jerusalem be shared, with East Jerusalem be the capital of Palestine. His Imperial Majesty thought it best that Jerusalem be an international city, in which the world saw it as a religious capital for all. This idea was not entertained, nor did Egypt’s President Nassar accept the Emperor’s Help in developing a peace plan. We have many ideologies that conflict or are simply are not realistic that were coming into play, a few of them is the Zionist desire to expel Palestinians from their land, not thinking that there should be any repercussions, the other is a Pan Arab movement, that was not in alignment with African Unity being it based on Islamic unity rather than a Continental Unity. Another being by those in Ethiopia, that Israel as a people and that Israel as a government was the same, and that Ethiopia should always defend Israel because of Biblical and historical links, not realizing that the Jews occupying were foreigners to the region.

Israel refused to adhere to the UNSC Resolution 242, October 25, 1973, during the Yom Kippur Warfurther resolutions were passed and ignored, 338 and 339 leading to resolution 340 which also passes 14 to 0. It goes as:

In UNSCR 340, the Council demanded that the belligerent parties cease fire immediately and completely, and return to the positions occupied by them at 1650 GMT on 22 October 1973.

The Council also

  • Requested the Secretary-General to increase the number of United Nations military observers on both sides of the cease-fire lines.
  • Set up a United Nations Emergency Force to be composed of personnel drawn from UN member states except the permanent members of the Security Council.
  • Requested the Secretary-General to report back within 24 hours on these two provisions.
  • Requested the Secretary-General report back on a continuing basis on the implementation of this resolution, as well as 338 and 339, and requested all member states to co-operate fully in the implementation of these resolutions.

The resolution was adopted with 14 votes to none. The People’s Republic of China did not vote or formally abstain.

Ethiopia also saw along with the world community that accountability was needed for Israel, though it had been assisting Ethiopia and its military. In agreement with AU it was stated that Africa needed to sever ties with Israel in order to push for the human rights of Palestine and their right to their land. Ethiopia severed ties Oct. 25 1973 on Oct. 29th all Israeli’s were asked to leave Ethiopia, and the Embassy was shut down.

At the time of His Imperial Majesties disappearance, when it came to the issue of Palestine, That there should be UN troops on the ground, and that there should be implementation of the 1967 borders agreed in UN Resolution 242. This is still the position of most of the world when they speak of a two state solution based on the 1967 borders. In recent years both the US and Israel have become more conservative and hawkish, and will not allow human rights investigations, nor peacekeepers. It is written “Alliance and Alienation” that Emperor Haile Selassie I suggested that the most Orthodox and Religious Leaders of both sides, Muslims, Jews with Christians work together, being that the root of many of the beliefs are rooted in religious matters and the rhetoric spoken by the Mosques, Temples and Churches more than influential than political leaders. These ideas still hold legitimacy in the eyes of both religious and non religious people.

There is a rich and long history that is very important to understand the climate of the times, and how Ethiopia politically moved and dealt with different decades and events. In order that we share simple facts, the context, pretext is up to the reader to investigate, rather than speculate. It is a fact, that no embassy from Ethiopia during His Imperial Majesties Reign was ever set up in Israel, nor was there ever a state visit for Israel. That secret relations were kept between The King of Kings with Israel, and that Israeli government worked with those both who wanted to see His Majesty succeed and those who did not. Israel was working with the DERG Murderous Communist Government and were in Ethiopia again arming the military in 1975 and trying to prevent  Muslim Eritrean Independence.

The relationship between Ethiopia and the State of Israel after 1948 is complex and layered, some of which will take ones back hundreds of years before the state of Israel and  to the presence of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Jerusalem. There are two Churches in Jerusalem that Ethiopians have run for years, Debre Genet was founded by the Emperor Yohannes IV (r. 1872 – 1889). Yohannes, it is said, funded the venture with war booty from his battles with the Ottomans and Deir Sultan, the other is in the Old City, located on the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

The relationship to King Solomon and Queen Makeda Candice of Ethiopia,  thru to the life and times of Christ,  is recorded in the Scriptures where ”Then the angel of the Lord said to Philip: Start out and go south to the road that leads down from Jerusalem to Gaza. So he set out and was on his way when he caught sight of an Ethiopian. This man was a eunuch, a high official of the Kandake Queen of Ethiopia in charge of all her treasure.” (Acts, 8:26-27)

In the book of Amos, chapter 9 we see that Ethiopia is the elder or Father of Israel and that the Ethiopias are known to be loved by the God of Abraham:” Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?”(KJV)

Ethiopia’s presence in Jerusalem and Judaism, is at the heart of the faith, which is why Ethiopia is also known as Beta-Israel, and well as the Tribe of Judah. The Ethiopian presence from Genesis to Moses to King David and King Solomon, on to Christ is integral in the identity of the people and country of Ethiopia. Ethiopia considers it’s King, an Emperor and King of Israel, anointed and divinely touched by God. The continues to present, in which the customs of both Judaism and Christianity are ancient and public. With this in mind, that until 1948, Beta Israel, and the King of Israel came from Ethiopia alone, in which Emperor Haile Selassie I sat on the “Throne of Zion.”  Being that a new nation of people calling themselves Israel, didn’t consider Emperor Haile Selassie I, their King, and were aligned with British and other European nations who had colonial exploits of the time. Emperor Haile Selassie I, just after regaining His Country from the Italians, in 1941 was also working with the British and allied forces, and saw that He couldn’t trust the British due to the colonial mindstate that was still in their agenda. Likewise, a lack of trust was apparent for the state of Israel, and yet relationships with both the British, USA and Israel were secretly and publicly were explored.

Thank you for reading, and I hope it was more than insightful. I hope that we realize like in 1973 the World needs to take global action in this time.  We need to find permeant solutions that do not support genocide, war crimes, forced displacement, or further escalations. Rather than being pulled into religious polarities, let us look at the topic of human rights, and the evil of collective punishment and the dangers the world faces if they do not tackle injustice. The problems that face the Middle East can not be solved with violence, we encourage all efforts internationally to find a peaceful end through compromise and mediation. Our Prayers are with the Whole World, That the naked be clothed, the  hungry be fed, the sick be nourished, the infants cared for and the elders protected, that the ignorant be instructed, O Jah, Let the words of I mouth and the meditations of I heart be acceptable in Jah Sight. Emperor Haile Selassie I in His Christ, Rastafari.

Recent Works. 7 Art Meditations.

Being an artist is like being in a storm all the time, there is non stop brain activity that the non verbal manners of communication are trying to find a still visualization. In the subtle is the profound and in the loud there is an eire lack of anything worth hearing. Navigating through the highways of creation creator experience is the world of recording, writing and doing the stuff to get the art out. It is a joy to share this rush of emotions and thoughts as paintings, and drawings. Here are some of the new works, not all, because many of the pieces are awaiting release on albums. It is important to write, that I am now including a time limit, which was always in my discretion of when I will show InI art. We have to figure out as artists how to not hold ourselves and others waiting to release works, while being mindful that it takes time to put out an album or song. Doing art isn’t something artists really choose all way, it takes them over, and it is a way of breathing that is inseparable from life. This is why it needs to be shared and out in the world, because like air, and the living breath of life, we are here to share it.  Here are some new works, with much more to come. I hope you enjoy, and if there are any questions, feel free to message InI. Jah Be with you all, and Give thanks to be able to share this precious experience together in any capacity. In the Mercy and Grace of the Most High Jah! Rastafari! Haile Selassie I First.

RASTAFARI PIONEERS

NEW PIECE “Rastafari Pioneers”

In the last few Strongs, many of us prepare for the new year, and the celebrations for His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie First. It is a time of inner and outer travel often. In the last few Strongs, InI have reflecting on the Pioneers of Rastafari, those who led the way, and the impact they had and have. I feel that our collective experience cannot be fully drawn or painted, nor all the people represented, this is a part of a collective story and records of those who we know, there are those many of us don’t or will learn about more. The piece is to encourage ones to know more, to learn about the foundations of the Rastafari Movement. Some of these men we met, some taught us or our elders, and they are family to many as well. In full respect and reverence, this piece salutes the Fathers who gave their lives so we can know Rastafari as King, and Ourselves as a movement. Many of these men met the King of Kings, some sent by H.I.M., all of them emanated His Love.
In a time where many talk about disunity, let us project our unity and love for the many Houses of Rastafari, the growth and changes, the natural progressions that make up our Fathers Mansion. In a ministry of Reconciliation, May we reconcile with the most important of topics, including Love amongst bredren and sistren, where we come from, and where are we going.

Ethiopian Eve. Small. Acrylic

This is a piece that I have enjoyed making before, and making small updates or changes. This is the mini version of Ethiopian Evening. Acrylic 20×16″. The piece highlights that even in total unity we still are one of kind. This is highlighted by the man in the center, wearing jeans and blue shirt with a red gold and green beanie.

The Emperor in the Garden

The Emperor in The Garden.  : Acrylic and Indian ink

How good it is to start the day with a mediation of simple goodness. Micah 6:8 “He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you, But to do justly,
To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God.”

Brand New piece of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, Conquering Lion of Judah. This is based on the last known photo of HIM and invoked lots of emotions. One is that the sun isn’t setting, neither does His Reign End. That this Garden was more of a place of peace and family, not a place of recluse or arrest. His Majesty is the brightness and solemness of the Garden and it is an expression of His Life. The feeling was more important than detail, and movement was focused on through using impressionism.
The King of Kings lives up to His Title, by being humble in times of adversity, one who taught to us to love mercy and fought for Justice for all Mankind. Glorify and Praise that which is Good. Rastafari. Prints are available, inbox if interested.
Thank You Justyn for commissioning the piece and having a great moment and glimpse worthy of remembering. Egziabeher Yemasagan

This piece is symbolic of the way elephants protect family and the adaptation of new situations. Liken to how a blind man will describe an elephant differently based on where he is standing, so we must realize there can be many truths that exist at once. This will allow us to end tribalistic thinking that declares one version of history the only history accepted.

Sizzla Kalonji / Ras Elijah Tafari Art Series. First Five!

First and foremost InI Give thanks that the Most High has given us the blessing to link and complete these works. InI give thanks for the love shown and the kindness and teachings of the entire Island of Jamaica. Most High Jah Rastafari be Praised in a Mighty Sound!

" A shared Vision "

” A Shared Vision “

The Journey and getting to know Miguel Collins started creatively, through art. When one looks at his eyes, you can almost hear the multiple ideas and thoughts, streaming through as he listens and observes silently. Sizzla pulsates creativity, and vision. The Vision is Collective Praise, Honor and Respect to All Nations in abidance of The Word of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie First.
This piece was created in 2022 before we went to Jamaica at Mr. Miguel Collin’s Invitation. Little did I know all the other nations we were to meet in 3 Tabernacles. Ironically I didn’t put the Mexican Flag in this piece which was and is part of the manifestation with the crew. In this piece all nations are being called to Jamaica, to the Tabernacles, for healing, grounding and education. All of which we found  and more when we arrived. The True Tabernacle, The Holy of Holies is in Jah, Haile Selassie the First is the Tabernacle, the Temple and the Chapel. To go into HIM is to go into Jah…, what was, is and forever will be. There are 13 Ark’s or vessels in the piece, plus HIM.
This was the beginning, and there are many joy-tings ( paintings) that the Rt. Hon Miguel Collins has encouraged, come up with and put ideas into. We look forward to sharing this series starting with five, plus the new album cover ” Rise Up” and a collective vision of Unity and Rastafari in this time. Jamaica is a Holy Place, chosen by Jah. Blessed are those who are able to see this powerful island and people. Big Up Judgement Yard!

"MIGUEL N CHAZ"

“MIGUEL N CHAZ”

It was evening, and there was a diversity of people in Judgement yard. I was taken back by a child that was watching Miguel and Chaz together drumming and on the guitar, with Dre-Z Melodi peering in back. All those around can see when music is a central point of being, a perfect place. Everyone seemed to be in a perfect place, and so it seemed perfect to do some sketches and take some photos and be able to reflect and meditate on it. I like the sketch with a little ink, it seemed to capture the ease and casualness of being in harmony.  Click here for a print: http://blog.raselijah.com/shop/products/miguel-and-chaz/

"RT. HON. MIGUEL COLLINS "

“RT. HON. MIGUEL COLLINS “

As InI got to know Miguel and not just go by the music, thru livity and experience, I also began to try and figure out how to paint him in a way that would look like him. Everyone has a particular energy, and as an artist you want to find that flow, and aura. No face is the same, and it takes time to be able to encapsulate a feeling or image of a person. What an artist doesn’t want to do is make the image upsetting or inaccurate, so this was a study of his face. It seemed important in this piece to have his turban because of the importance of faith and order that is a militant part of the Rt. Hon. Miguel Collin’s personality.  click here for a print: http://blog.raselijah.com/shop/products/rt-hon-miguel-collins/
" SonLight Living Room "

” SonLight Living Room “

One of the joys was to do a mural in Sizzla’s Living Room at his compound in Judgement Yard. Lots of experiences on the stairs and with his nephew who helped do some of the painting too. It was a piece of Africa with a tear where the Nile River is on the face of a lion. The energy of the living room and the patio had a certain radiance when the sun hit. The color and hours spent watching the gradual changes made it worthy to try and recreate. I can feel the morning, and the excitement of the day, amongst the children of Jah.  Click here to get a print: http://blog.raselijah.com/shop/products/sonlight-in-the-living-room/

" Miguel's guitar "

” Miguel’s guitar “

Using a different palette and technique to try and add a uniqueness to Jamaica air, trees and earth, this piece is a tribute to Miguel’s love of things to come and traditions of old. From the Tabernacle, which is not heavily decorated to the contrast of the torn jeans and perfect tie and shirt, told a story of a work and person in progress. A place where the spirit and Foundation can sing itself into any place Jah sees fit. A place where the man is there for the world to see rather than hidden in the Tabernacle.  click to get a print: http://blog.raselijah.com/shop/products/miguels-guitar/

SIZZLA'S "RISE UP!"

SIZZLA’S “RISE UP!”

Album cover of the Grammy nominated reggae artist Sizzla Kalonji. In this piece Sizzla described exactly what he wanted in detail. The appearance to make it look like it was done quickly was  part of the intention. In true art, the flow and vibe is more important than making it photographic. The raw and aggressive lines, and the clear message carries an impact the sublime does not. It is meant to hit the viewer. This included the letters, which are all hand done. He wanted it to feel Rastafari, and also show real street letters that ones could read and are true to form. Something we could see on a wall and smile. I was very pleased listening to the album and that the art and the album also flowed, it was a work of art in perfect balance, clear and upfull. Raspect.

This is the first look at an ongoing series of creative ideas from a musical legend and genius, Rt. Hon. Miguel Collins, aka Sizzla Kalonji, one that will take the viewer into different visions and prayers, as well as human emotions that we all can relate too. I cannot not thank him enough for the warm invitation that touched the hearts of InI, Priest Abba, Dre-Z Melodi and Ras Gilbert profoundly. It is a joy to share the experience artistically at this time. Many wonderful and powerful ideas were and are being shared. More to come. Give thanks for viewing and supporting Rastafari Culture.
In His Mercy and Truth,
Most High Almighty God, Holy Emmauel I, King Selassie I, Jah Rastafari.
One Perfect Love.

INTERVIEW WITH A.L.N. ABOUT R.U.N.N., ETHIOPIA, AND AKAE BEKA.

Today is a historic day, for Ethiopia it is the first elections in 16 years, and though it will not be perfect it is a step toward national democracy. I pray that Ethiopians at home and abroad work together to unify Ethiopia and turn a new page toward true national solidarity. It is an honor to share an interview done by the Honorable Jah Daniel for the African Liberation Network. We speak in depth about Reform the United Nations Now, and present a comprehensive outlook and letter to the Ethiopian Prime Minister and President of Ethiopia. This letter is endorsed by the House of Immanuel, The Rastafari Coalition and R.U.N.N. We are looking for more signatories and endorsements, please link if this is something you would like to be a part of.

 A Nation-Wide Message on U.N. 23rd Anniversary.
On this day, the 23rd anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Organization is being observed throughout the world, and, as in the past, Ethiopia joins in the observance of this auspicious occasion.
The United Nations Day, which we commemorate today, has a twofold significance, for 1968 has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year for human rights.
Not only have We opportunities in the past to explain the objectives and activities of the United Nations Organization, but We have also championed the cause for the strengthening of this same organization towards the maintenance of world peace and the raising of the standard of living of mankind at large.
Nonetheless, on the particular occasion which We have described as having a twofold significance, We would like to express our views specifically on the subject and content of the rights of man.
In the recorded history of man, there have always been periods at which man has risen to the challenge of the times.
At yet other periods man has taken time from the most pressing tasks of the day and paused to reconsider and reassess the extent to which the more fundamental rules of conduct which he has devised and laid for himself are actually being implemented.
Such is the year 1968 which has been designated by the General Assembly of the United Nations as the International Year For Human Rights.
If one were to visualize the history of mankind in its wider universal context, one may well find it to be essentially a chronicle of man’s struggles to assert and consolidate certain fundamental human rights. The concept and interpretation as to what these rights comprise have varied throughout history according to the prevalence of the day. But it is not inaccurate to say that the most all comprising concept of human rights ever enunciated by man is the one contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights made 20 years ago.
Yet, 20 years after the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed and adopted the declaration just referred to, how far can we say today that the human rights enumerated therein have been unexceptionally respected or invariably protected the world over?
Repressive Apartheid
The persistently repressive policy of apartheid in South Africa, the recent criminal acts by the illegal regime in Rhodesia and the silencing by means of brutal violence of the voice of reason in the person of Mr. Martin Luther King and Senator Robert Kennedy can only emphasize necessity for all of us, wherever we may be, to redouble our efforts in our championship of the noble cause of the rights of man.
The fundamental ideas forming the basis of the Declaration of Human Rights stem from the recognition of the self-evident truth that the human person, created in the image of God, is invested with Human dignity, inalienable, inviolable.
The growing recognition of the fact that all men are members of one single human family, at the same time, impose on us the realization that this fundamental unity of mankind can grow and prosper only if it is based on freedom, liberty, universal justice, and world peace.
Human rights, as we know, are closely intertwined with the fundamental freedoms. The indivisible unity of these rights and liberties, under the protection of the rule of law, is the best expression of the highest aspirations of the individual and of mankind at large.
The member states of the United Nations Organization have reaffirmed their belief in human rights and fundamental freedoms and taken solemn pledges to protect and support these same rights and freedoms in every way and every manner possible. This faith clearly manifests itself in the charter of the world organization.
The first necessary step for the achievement of the above mentioned objectives, however is the fostering of understanding amongst peoples of the true meaning and significance of these cherished rights and liberties.
To that end, in Ethiopia, We have seen to it that during 1968 all appropriate measures were taken to realize the observance of the international year for human rights. We, therefore, instructed the relevant departments of Our government, as well other organizations, to implement the necessary program during 1968.
In this crucial period when the cause of human rights is handicapped by a variety of circumstances, we believe that paramount consideration must be given to honoring those organizations which have made outstanding contributions in fostering the rights of man, and such eminent individuals as the late Martin Luther King who have sacrificed life itself as a result of their advocacy of the cause of equal rights, that their own lasting interests are best assured in an overall respect for fundamental freedoms and liberties.
Since all men are born free and equal, invested by Almighty God with inalienable human dignity, it is only right and proper that the spirit of human brotherhood should reign supreme among all peoples who inhabit this planet, that differences of race, tribe, language, pigmentation, religion, or sect should not be made instruments of discrimination between man and man- for all men are equal before the law of creation.
The human rights and fundamental freedoms we have mentioned constitute the cornerstones of the constitution of the Ethiopian Empire. The original constitution We voluntarily gave to Our people was clearly based on these same rights and freedoms. But the revised constitution, while not departing from the permanent foundations, amplifies the greater relief and strengthens the human rights and fundamental liberties of the Ethiopian people.
Fundamental Rights
In the revised constitution of Ethiopia, the guardianship of fundamental rights and freedoms does not devolve on the courts of law alone, but forms an integral part of Our duties and responsibilities as Sovereign.
This fact alone testifies, bears witness to Our personal devotion and the high place We personally accord to the fundamental freedoms and liberties whose cause is being underscored throughout the world during the present International Year for Human Rights.
Nor is the cause of human rights something novel to the Ethiopian people as a whole. Throughout history this nation has jealously safeguarded its age-old freedom and independence, which are the essential ingredients of human rights.
We therefore trust that, following Our own example, Our beloved people will continue to comprehend and care for these cherished rights and freedoms, to have programs which have been organized in connection with the International Year for Human Rights.
We pray the Almighty to guide in his wisdom the world’s statesmen in their endeavor to strengthen the United Nations Organization, to foster good-neighborly relations and co-operation among states, to eliminate the cause of misunderstandings and ways from this planet, and to establish an enduring peace, to safeguard human rights, and to attain true equality by raising the standard of living of all mankind.
